Coach Tom was born and raised in Lakeville, MA and grew up an avid athlete, playing football and baseball, running track and cross country, being an avid skier, swimmer and SCUBA diver. As a high school athlete, Coach Tom focused his athletic abilities on the Apponequet Lakers football team, where he played defensive back, wide receiver and special teams, but was also a member of the track team running the 200m and 400m sprints, 800m distance and 4x200m relay. Outside of organized sports, Tom's passion was on the mountains where he grew up learning downhill alpine skiing on various peaks in the Northeast, being the time-trial practice competition for his older cousin who was a member of the Cranmore Ski Team and always challenging each other to new races with interesting turns (usually through the expert glades!) Tom has skied some of the highest peaks in the United States, including a descent from just shy of 13,000 feet from the Breckenridge Peak in Colorado. Coach Tom is an avid runner and has completed endurance races, including two triathlons and is beginning to learn bouldering.
As a police officer for over 14 years, also including being a firefighter and EMT, Tom has experience as SWAT officer, including being Law Enforcement Sniper Qualified, a canine officer, firearms and active shooter response instructor. Through this experience, Tom understands the physical and mental demands of being a first responder and tactical operations. Coach Tom uses his experience, education and skills as an athlete and applies them to the newly termed "taclete," or tactical athlete skill sets. Coach Tom heavily focuses and studies human performance in tactical athletes, including biometric data tracking, recovery processes and the effect of mental stress on the body for physical performance.
Coach Tom continues his love of football as a volunteer coach for his oldest son's youth football team, and his youngest son's little league team, to help build confidence, discipline, teamwork and leadership in local youth. Tom holds a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice and a master of science in Advanced Counterterrorism and Homeland Security. In addition, Tom holds various fitness coaching certifications including as a Certified Personal Trainer, Performance Exercise Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Youth Exercise Specialist and Sports Nutrition Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Tom is also a certified USA Football coach for both tackle and flag at the youth and high school levels and also a certified Babe Ruth baseball coach through Human Kinetics.
